Instrument Families

Strings
All have strings, fingerboards, and tuning pegs.  Can be played with a bow or by plucking.
Violin, Viola, 'Cello, Bass

Woodwinds
Most use a wooden reed which vibrates to create sound.  Sound is created by blowing into a mouthpiece or across a soundhole
Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone

Brass
The vibration of the players lips create the sound.  Valves are pressed to change the pattern of the air and create a different pitch
Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, French Horn, Euphonium

Percussion
Sound is created when one object strikes against another
Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Maracas, Timpani, Bells, Wind Chimes
