When does my child have homework?

Homework is given daily with the exception of Fridays. Please sign/initial
homework as evidence of completion. Stickers are given for completed
assignments. A record is kept of completed/incompleted assignments. Daily
review is vital to first grade success.

When are Spelling tests taken?

A pretest is given on Thursday of each week. Students who do not miss any
words are excluded from taking the test on Friday. Pretesting may vary due to
holidays.

Final spelling tests are completed on Fridays. In the event of a Friday holiday, testing will be the school day prior to the holiday. Weekly words reinforce phonics skills being taught. Words will be sent home in your child's studybook as well as being posted on the Teacher Web. Of great importance is having your child practice writing each word prior to testing.

Can I send snacks or invitations for my child's birthday?

You are indeed welcome to send cupcakes or cookies for your child's
birthday. Please send these the morning of your child's birthday. We will
share these as time allows in class. If sending birhtday invitations,
please send them to the whole class unless you are having
a strictl boy or girl party. Feelings are hurt whena student is left
off the party list.

--------------------------------------

Will my child need to memorize math facts?

First graders are required to MEMORIZE facts to 12. This will come with
daily review. For educational fun, our class competes in races of math
facts with the other first grade classes. We will also complete the old
timed tests.

Should I be concerned about my child being tardy?

First grade instruction begins immediately after morning announcements.
Students who come to class late will not have the opportunity to properly
prepare themselves for classroom instruction. It is IMPORTANT to note that
school attendance is recorded through the computer system beginning this
year. My class record will be reported via the internet during
announcements. If there is a problem getting your child to class on time,
please remember that all buses deliver students promptly. Your help in this
aspect of your child's education is greatly appreciated!

--------------------------------------

What if my child needs to go home on another bus?

It is understood that emergencies do arise, but please try to send all bus
change notes to school in the morning so that the proper arrangements can be
made. PLEASE do not wait until late in the afternoon to make the needed
change.

Can my child hand out birthday invitations at school?

If a child is having a party at home, invitations may be sent out from
school if the child will be inviting either the whole class or at least all
students of the same sex. Please place the invitations in the study folder
and I will place them in the backpacks of the students who are invited. If
only select students are being invited, please mail the invitations from
home so that there will not be any hurt feelings at school. As you well
know, children of this age find it very upsetting to be "left out". This is
the best way to avoid the birthday party "blues". Thank you for your
cooperation with this.
